“The Meanest Mother in the World”

“Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.” Proverbs 31:30

Maybe you have read “The Meanest Mother in the World” poem. There are several renditions, but several years ago, I gave my Mom a framed copy of that poem. If you get a minute, google it, and read what it says. It is too long to share in a devotion. It says that my Mom raised me to eat right, act right, and behave right. She expected me to mind my manners and to treat others with respect. Just because other children did things did not mean that I could participate. Mom was strict and as a child and a teenager it was not fun. Sometimes it was downright mean.

Yet I would not change one thing about the way I was raised. The last few lines of that poem says this: “My mother insisted in raising us with faith in God and wanted us to be honest and responsible adults. I thank God for giving me the meanest mother in the world.”

On this Mother’s Day, 2020, I am so happy to be able to thank God for my Mom. She is truly a Godly woman who Loves God and Loves People. I have had the privilege over the last 10 years to have her living close to me and I have had the privilege to watch her grow in her Christian walk with Jesus. I can never teach Mom more than she has taught me. I am grateful for every Bible verse she read me at the table over supper. I am grateful for every time she prayed with me before I went to bed. I am grateful for every time she woke me on Sunday mornings and “made” me go to church. I am grateful for every prayer she prayed over me because I don’t believe I would be where I am today without those prayers.

I am blessed with a Godly Mom. If you have a Godly Mom take the time today to let her know how much you appreciate her. If your Godly Mom has gone on to be with the Lord, take time to tell someone something about what she taught you. If your Mom is not or was not Godly, make it a point to tell her about Jesus and make up your mind that you want to be known as a Godly Mom.

It doesn’t matter whether you are a young Mom or your children have grown, we need more Godly Moms to help shape our world. You can be smart, rich, beautiful and have everything you could have ever wanted in life, but the very best thing you can be for this world is a Godly Mom.

If you are not a Mom, take time today to find a niece or nephew, or young girl or boy, which you can pour your life into. Help them to learn about Jesus and teach them about God. Remember, ““Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.”

Dear Jesus, thank you today for our Godly Moms. If there is a Mom reading this that hasn’t acted with your guidance in their lives help them to turn to you and allow you to lead them in the Godly way. Help us all to be more grateful for the Moms that helped to shape our lives and point us to you. May all Moms have a great day blessed by you. In your name we pray, Amen.
