“When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, ‘I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.’” John 8:12
Most of you know that Peggy and I love going to yard sales. We enjoy seeing what people sale and don’t need anymore. One year while on the Longest Yard Sale we came upon a man who had a table of mostly junk on it. Yet on the sign attached to the table it said, “Free, just make sure you take it with you.” We laughed and I began to look at the items. The man continued to tell me I needed something on the table. Well after looking I picked up an old extension light that had been home made. It had a long cord attached to a light bulb with a cone around the bulb. I decided to take it and the man said thanks.
Peggy made fun of my extension light. She said it was just a piece of junk. When we got home and were cleaning out the truck she said, “Well, I’ve got everything out of the truck except that piece of junk, light you took.” I went out and rescued my light.
Now that extension light came in real handy later. I used it several nights when I needed to see something outside. It had a handy clamp on it that you could use to attach to a car hood if you were looking under the car hood at night. I used it several times and I was glad I took it. You never get anything for free and yet here I was using my free light to help me when I needed it.
The free light got me to Just Thinking! Jesus came to give us a free gift. That free gift is something we can use or just put away. And that free gift that Jesus give helps to light our way. Hear Jesus’ words, “When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, ‘I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.’” (John 8:12.) The light of life is the free gift of not only salvation, but a life meant just for you. You can have the free gift of life if you just follow the light of Jesus in your everyday life.
And for all of us that already have this free gift of light, are we giving it away like the man at the yard sale. Are we hoarding our light or are we letting it shine so others can see it and have the same opportunity as we did to pick it up and put it into our lives.
If you have the light, then let it shine. If you do not have the light, why not pick it up today and start living the life that God meant for you.
Dear Lord, thanks for the light. Thanks for giving us the opportunity to pick up the light and allow it to guide our path. And Lord, help those who are walking in darkness to receive the light of life that will change their life forever. In Jesus name I pray, Amen.
